Benjamin Fish

Ok so I thought I would give you a bit more of a rounded introduction to who I am. As I say I have worked in the design industry for over 10 years and I wouldn’t want to do anything else. I feel very lucky that I have been able to mine the rich seam of my passion, supporting my family as I do so. All the time getting better, learning new techniques, software, hardware and approaches to common creative problems. Well they say practice makes perfect…

In my 30s cooking good food has become a big part of my routine as my sons grow up, I really enjoy this as a creative process, finding it quite relaxing for the most part. It gives me a similar feeling to work on many levels, using different cooking techniques dependent on ingredients, getting the timings right, seasoning to taste adding that extra personal touch. Bringing all the elements together at just the right moment for the best results. I think there are a lot of parallels. Also you get to travel on a culinary level, getting a taste of cultures from all over the world, you just have to do a little research and buy the ingredients and work through the method adding your own twist of course.

I grew up in Shropshire as a fan of Nirvana and their sensibilities, style and counter culture rhetoric. Subversive with intelligence and a goal. Most of all it was accessible, I could actually play their music and did for hours on end. Mix this with the psychedelic blues of Jimi Hendrix a musician untouchable in talent, with an enchanting cool nonchalant style that I still can’t work out today. There you have two big influences on my style since my adolescent days that remain to this day.

Around about this time I was studying fine art and media studies at A-level (circa 1996) and really wanted to be a fine artist, I loved the freedom it gave me but also the way I could send a message without words. I was also interested in video as an art form growing up using great movies as a form of escapism. It wasn’t till I got the opportunity to use Photoshop (4.0) that something in my brain clicked. It was amazing, I could be creative at a blistering pace and developed a love of typography. Being able to realise the shadows of my ideas left by the flashes of inspiration finessing them by the process. Pulling in influences from any medium I wanted at will, with the help of a little thing called the internet.

Since that moment I have been creating, developing and working hard to hone my craft. Evolving in parallel with technology wanting to do nothing else but create, and so here we are…
